Composition and structure
Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The Air Assault Forces (AAF) are a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, characterized by high mobility, the capability for vertical envelopment (aerial coverage) of the enemy, autonomy of action, and a variety of operational roles, including missions within the enemy's operational depth.
The AAF are designed for rapid response within the Ukrainian Defense Forces to counter military threats through swift deployment and the conduct of operations (combat actions), including independent operations in specific sectors and active combat within the enemy's operational depth.
Functional Components
According to their functional purpose, the AAF are divided into two components:
- Air Assault Component: Designed for air assault operations. This component is primarily based on separate air assault (airmobile) brigades.
- Airborne Component: Designed to perform tasks of varying complexity and nature within the enemy's operational depth as an airborne landing force, either in full strength or in designated groups. This component is primarily based on a separate airborne brigade.
Operational Role and Impact
The Air Assault Forces belong to the immediate response forces and are maintained in a state of constant readiness. Their employment allows the Defense Forces to:
- Extend the combat zone from the line of contact into the depth of the enemy's operational formation.
- Shift military actions onto the enemy's territory.
- Disorganize enemy command and control systems and logistics.
- Create favorable conditions for victory over superior enemy forces and ensure the success of strategic operations.
International Cooperation
In accordance with Ukrainian legislation and international law, the AAF may be deployed as a national contingent (in full or in part) for:
- Operations within the NATO Response Force or coalition forces to repel or deter armed aggression.
- International peacekeeping operations and military assistance.
Day of Celebration: November 8th
Structure of the Air Assault Forces
The organizational structure includes:
- AAF Command: The military command body responsible for leadership, operational planning, command and control, and force generation.
- AAF Corps: With subordinated sets of military units and subdivisions.
- Directly Subordinated Units: Specialized units reporting directly to the command.
- Training Units and Institutions: Centers for personnel development and specialized training.
Note on Evolution: The structure of the AAF is dynamic and changes based on the optimization of the Armed Forces, development of new weaponry (AMSE — Armament, Military, Special, and Airborne Equipment), and the evolution of operational art and tactics.
